Emergency Lighting Systems
Stay Safe and Compliant with UK Regulations
Emergency lighting is a vital component of any commercial building's fire safety plan. In the event of a power failure or emergency evacuation, emergency lighting provides essential illumination to help occupants exit the building safely. At JPR Electrical Services, we specialise in the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of compliant emergency lighting systems for commercial and industrial premises across the UK.
What is Emergency Lighting?
Emergency lighting is automatically triggered when the normal power supply fails, ensuring visibility in critical areas such as:
Escape routes and fire exits
Stairwells and corridors
Fire alarm panels and equipment
High-risk task areas
Open areas for safe evacuation
Emergency lighting is not only about compliance — it’s about saving lives in high-risk situations.
UK Emergency Lighting Regulations
All commercial properties in the UK must have compliant emergency lighting installed as part of their fire safety responsibilities. Key regulations include:
🔹 The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Under this legislation, the "Responsible Person" (usually the employer, building owner, or manager) must ensure the safety of everyone on the premises. This includes providing adequate emergency lighting in case of power failure or fire.
🔹 BS 5266-1:2016 – Emergency Lighting Code of Practice
This British Standard provides clear guidance on the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of emergency lighting systems. It outlines the minimum levels of illumination, placement of lights, and duration (typically 1 or 3 hours) of emergency operation.
🔹 Fire Risk Assessment
Your emergency lighting requirements must be based on a current fire risk assessment. This assessment should be reviewed regularly and whenever building use or layout changes.
Types of Emergency Lighting
We supply and install a full range of emergency lighting systems, including:
Escape Route Lighting – Ensures clear visibility along escape paths
Open Area (Anti-Panic) Lighting – Helps occupants move safely to exits
High-Risk Task Lighting – Provides sufficient light where dangerous processes are carried out
Maintained & Non-Maintained Units – Depending on your building's use and risk assessment
All systems are designed to meet the specific needs of your premises, ensuring full compliance and maximum safety.
Maintenance & Testing Services
UK law requires that emergency lighting systems are tested monthly (functional test) and annually (full duration test). We offer:
Scheduled testing in line with BS 5266-1
Logbook management for compliance evidence
Repairs and upgrades as needed
24/7 support for critical systems
Regular testing ensures that your emergency lighting will perform reliably when it matters most.
